As I type we’re waiting for some daylight for Dad to begin his daily trek to work in Jackson–but we expect that the added illumination will only serve to further prove what the patio light already insists: It’s still winter!
We’ve been experiencing a new trend this season, which has been kinda fun for the most part–when the weather prognosticators call for 5, 8 or 15 inches of snow that’s what we get, or even a little bit more! That’s completely revolutionary for us…in the prior history of my life we’ve never received the projected accumulation, which has led to a rather cynical view of the forecast services. Especially when we were younger we’d get our hopes set on a nice snow fall of 4-6 inches, based on the weather report–only to end up rather crestfallen when (with good storm) merely half that amount would arrive. Thus this year has been a real treat!
The past two days have been in the 50’s and we probably lost around a foot of snow due to melting, settling and evaporation. Last night however this next storm began to roll in with the weight of a polar cold front behind it! The rain started around 6:30 and continued with a light to moderate intensity until about 1 am this morning, when the wind picked up, switched direction and began driving snow through my open bedroom window….alerting me to the fact that I ought to consider shutting it!
This morning there is about 5 inches of fresh snow covering up the muddy mess of yesterday, and more is still coming down with the stiff North wind. It will be interesting trying to clean up after this storm, since the ground isn’t frozen any more and yesterday the tractor was leaving 8″ ruts in the mud when I fed the sheep another round bale….
But while it will be a mess for a while, we know that this too shall pass and Spring will surely come eventually…and in the meantime we’ll just keep enjoying winter!
Matthew
Genesis 8:22 While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.
