It’s still winter in Michigan….

As I type we’re waiting for some daylight for Dad to begin his daily trek to work in Jackson–but we expect that the added illumination will only serve to further prove what the patio light already insists: It’s still winter!

We’ve been experiencing a new trend this season, which has been kinda fun for the most part–when the weather prognosticators call for 5, 8 or 15 inches of snow that’s what we get, or even a little bit more! That’s completely revolutionary for us…in the prior history of my life we’ve never received the projected accumulation, which has led to a rather cynical view of the forecast services. Especially when we were younger we’d get our hopes set on a nice snow fall of 4-6 inches, based on the weather report–only to end up rather crestfallen when (with good storm) merely half that amount would arrive. Thus this year has been a real treat!

The past two days have been in the 50’s and we probably lost around a foot of snow due to melting, settling and evaporation. Last night however this next storm began to roll in with the weight of a polar cold front behind it! The rain started around 6:30 and continued with a light to moderate intensity until about 1 am this morning, when the wind picked up, switched direction and began driving snow through my open bedroom window….alerting me to the fact that I ought to consider shutting it!

This morning there is about 5 inches of fresh snow covering up the muddy mess of yesterday, and more is still coming down with the stiff North wind. It will be interesting trying to clean up after this storm, since the ground isn’t frozen any more and yesterday the tractor was leaving 8″ ruts in the mud when I fed the sheep another round bale….

But while it will be a mess for a while, we know that this too shall pass and Spring will surely come eventually…and in the meantime we’ll just keep enjoying winter!

Genesis 8:22 While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.

The Adventures of Travel

The adventure is on! Today is our second day of travel towards the Christian Worldview Film Festival in San Antonio. I’m traveling with two friends, Nate Jacobson and Johnathan Schutz. Nate is a writer/director/producer type, and Johnathan is working on a number of smaller projects. I drove down from Michigan yesterday, and picked up Nate from the Cincinatti area and Johnathan from Knoxville, TN.

Last night we stayed with my good friends the Munck family, and while we arrived a bit late for Mr. Munck, we all had a blast with Madison, talking movies, life and travel. In fact, after I went to bed, Nate, Madison and the other Johnathan watched 3/4 of a movie, and finally crashed around 2:30 a.m. I managed to get up around 5:30 after a few solid hours of sleep, and watched the sun come up.

It’s been a long time since I’ve observed a sunrise for a sunrise’s sake; especially in the hills. Memories came back of spending a week at a lake in New York’s Adorondac mountains, where I would often be up at dawn to spend as much of the morning as possible out on the lake in a rowboat. Recently, when I’ve been up at dawn, life has been too busy to actually enjoy the warmth of the sun and the beauty of the silloetted trees.

The message this morning at church (Cornerstone in Tennessee) was on personal holiness, from 2 Timothy 2:20-26. It was a good reminder that the battle for christianity and for the church is not a superficial struggle, but is fought in people’s hearts. Keeping yourself from evil is really important to having an effect on other people’s hearts, which is what the film festival is all about.

We’ve made it all the way to Louisiana on route to stay with friends in Houston, and have another 4 hours or so from the time of writing. Nate has been working on a shot list for his upcoming short film, ‘Wanted’. The actual stuff he’s saying is classified, but you can currently find his project on Kickstarter.

Tomorrow we have a short 3 hour jaunt until reaching San Antonio, so we should be able to be there early afternoon.

Praise God for a safe & successful trip so far!

– Jonathan
